In this project I hope to explore areas of nostalgia, my own childhood, and toys. My specialist pathway is illustration. This being my chosen pathway this project will influence how I approach the problem. I will be informed of the materials I plan to use, the techniques I will apply, and the outcomes I produce. The main materials I plan to use are markers, paint, lino and digital collage. I plan to use these materials as I believe they will be the most progressive in producing bright, colour artwork that will appeal to my target audience. Before I start anything, I will ensure that I have some aspect of a plan in place to guarantee that if I encounter any problems, I will be able to refer and see if I am able to incorporate them.

The deadline for this project is the 27th of May therefore I plan to finish everything by then so I can go back and refine my work. The audience for my work will be young children and their parents. My work revolves around teddy bears and bright colours therefore it will attract the attention of young children. I wish to capture and keep the attention of the audience by pushing the feelings of nostalgia, which can be captured and shared by many. I’m hoping that adults will think twice before throwing outgrown toys and teddies away, instead I’m hoping that they will consider donating these toys or keeping them in a storage place for nostalgia. My work will primarily be displayed on my Wix website as I’m able to include comments about the work as well as my reflective practice. My work will also be displayed in an exhibition held by the college, my larger piece will be put up on/against the wall due to their shapes and sizes. Furthermore, the larger pieces of my work will be displayed in the college exhibition command stripped to the wall.

Throughout this project I plan to use various aspects of primary research to help me to inform my ideas. I plan for my main source of primary research to be still- life drawings. This is because this aspect of research has been the most beneficial to me in past projects. Furthermore, I will be going to the Natural History Museum as a part of my primary research and seeing if there is anything that will support my theme. To further support my ideas, I will take inspiration from the works of well recognised illustrators such as Laura Child and Eric Carle, as well as looking at Toy Story 3. I plan to use these artists as inspiration for my work as well as to support me in selecting materials, techniques, and methods. I also plan to use the internet to look at artists websites online as a guide to lay out my website, research my topic and look at exhibits that correlate to my theme and intentions.

I plan to ensure that I consider ethics and sustainability throughout this project. I am planning to consider every step of my project so I can make conscious decisions and ensure that my work is ethically correct and as sustainable as possible. Due to my work being about toys, it is highly unlikely that it will cause any controversy, however,  I will still ensure that any of my opinion's that project onto my work are appropriate for my target audiences. Furthermore, to keep my work ethical, I will avoid copying the works of other illustrations and only take areas for inspiration. To consider sustainability, I plan to use toys that are second hand, such as toys from charity shops, or my own childhood toys.

My aim for this project is to create artwork that communicates ideas about toys that bring feelings of nostalgia and why some toys are viewed as valuable by children whilst other toys become discarded. For this I plan to use brighter colours so I am able to see which toys hold onto children's attention for longer and to see if dull colours play a role in the loss of attraction.  To generate initial ideas, I plan to sketch toys. I plan to do this as I feel that it will allow me to experiment with poses, viewpoints, shapes, and texture. Furthermore, I will look into the work of children's book illustrations, such as Eric Carle, to inspire me. Throughout this project, I intend to use and explore varied materials. Some of the materials I plan to explore are watercolour, lino, felt tip pens and Photoshop. I plan to explore these materials as I have not used them much in past projects and I feel that they will help me develop as a creative practitioner and communicate my ideas effectively. The main technique I plan to explore in this project is manipulating texture. This technique is commonly used in children's books; I feel that it will be a large contributor in making my work appealing to children. Furthermore, the main process that I plan to use is selecting colour pallets. Colour plays a significant role in holding a child's attention. Many children would refer to look at colourful objects rather than objects with more neutral shades. As a result, I plan to work consciously and considerately throughout this project so I can ensure my work will attract my target audience.

I will record my reflective practice by reflecting on each piece of work I have done and reflecting weekly. After I upload an image of my work to Wix I plan to evaluate it so I am aware of what I have done well and what I could do to develop and improve. Furthermore, I plan to reflect weekly, this is so I am aware of where I have started and where I need to go next within this project. I plan to evaluate each piece of my work individually on my website as I am progressing, then at the end of the project I plan to write a final evaluation to see what I could improve on.

In this project I hope to answer my creative question ‘why do so many toys end up in landfills?’ This question is important in finding some form of solution to the problem of landfills being a first choice for disposing of used objects. Landfills often contain thousands of teddy bears, whereas many of these bears could be given a new life rather than simply being thrown away. Therefore, as a result. Within this project I will constantly keep in mind the sustainability of my actions. My specialist pathway is illustration. The deadline for this project is the 27th of May therefore I plan to finish everything by then so I can go back and refine my work. The audience for my work will be children above 1 year and parents, however I plan to specifically direct my work to the attention of children. My work revolves around teddy bears and bright colours therefore it will attract the attention of young children. I wish to capture and keep the attention of the audience so I’m able to bring awareness to the number of toys that end up in landfills. From bringing awareness to toys in landfills, I’m hoping that adults will think twice before throwing outgrown toys and teddies away, instead I’m hoping that they will consider donating these toys or keeping them in a storage place for nostalgia. I plan to use these artists as inspiration for my work as well as to support me in selecting materials, techniques, and methods. Some more secondary research that I plan to do is use the internet. My aim for this project is to create artwork that communicates why some toys are attractive to children and valued and why others are not. For this I plan to use brighter colours for two of the toys and more neural colours for the other bear. The purpose of this is to see which teddies draw more attention and how to combat children losing interest in a toy quickly. To generate initial ideas, I plan to sketch toys. I plan to do this as I feel that it will allow me to experiment with poses, viewpoints, shapes, and texture.
